This picture below this shows the viewpoint the English had on some of the Indians who would fight for their land. This caused the English to fight back. This picture portrays the Indians as very violent and killing colonists. That is just how the British viewed some of the Indians.
This picture below shows the viewpoint the Indians had on the "newcomers" who showed up on their land (1600's). The Indians were very unsure who these people were and what their intentions were. In this picture the "newcomers" seem very weak and the Indians seem to be in power. The Indians were very welcoming and they took in these men, in hopes that they could fight in wars against these Native Americans rival tribes. That worked out very poorly for the Native Americans.
Indian territory in 1600s when the Massachusetts bay colony was just starting up. They would go on to conquer the Indians and take over their land. This land was dominated by Indians, the british came and took over. They forced Native Americans out of their land and destroyed any Indians who refused to give the British their land.
King Philips massive war vs. the English 1675-1676. It was a very bloody war that ended quickly. The War was only 1 year long. This shows how powerful the British were versus the Indians. This war put a scare into other Indian tribes in the area.
After King Phillip was defeated in 1676, the English put his head on a stake and put it on display in Plymouth. This was meant to be a reminder to any Indians who wanted to go to war against the English. The English put Phillip's head on a stake as intimidation, anyone who would mess with the English would end up like Phillip. This scared the colonists a lot, they thought they would never want to go against the British.
The first Continental Congress met right after the French and Indian War in 1774. There were delegates from 12 colonies this time; there were delegates from 7 colonies at the Albany congress. They met to make an appeal to the crown about the intolerable acts parliament passed. This shows an emergence of the colonies uniting against Britain.
Benjamin Franklin made this in the Albany Congress in 1754. This was the first time colonists were united. Benjamin Franklin used this slogan as a way to unite the colonists against Britain. This was an emergence of the independent minded colonists.
With the French gone after 1763, the colonists had no threat that they needed England to protect them from. With no threat to worry about the colonists did not need to British to protect them anymore. This is the emergence of an American sense of independence from their mother country Britain.
George Washington commands soldiers in the French + Indian War (1754-1763). Washington commanded soldiers alongside the British in this war, and he would eventually command the continental army against the British. After fighting alongside the British, the Americans realized the British were not as powerful as they had thought. This shows the emergence of one of the biggest leaders in the American Revolution, and the emergence of American realization that the British aren't invincible.
African-American slaves were brought to America on crowded ships. This was called the Middle Passage. Plantation owners were able to get African slaves over to America by the Middle Passage. There was an abundance of African slaves, and they would not revolt like the white indentured servants would. This was the emergence of a huge slavery system in America that would not end until after the civil war in 1865. The Middle Passage was in effect until parliament abolished the slave trade in 1807, which was a major turning point leading to the civil war.
Nathaniel Bacon was the leader of Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 which was the rebellion of indentured servants in Virginia. This caused the Plantation owners to rethink their labor system, they started using African slaves instead of rebellious white servants. This was the beginning of race-based slavery in the colonies.
